How to Calculate Roofing Squares

A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roofing area.

1. Measure length and width of each roof plane
2. Multiply length × width for square footage
3. Add all plane areas together
4. Divide total area by 100 for squares

Understanding Roof Pitch

Pitch is expressed as rise over a 12-inch run:

• 4/12 pitch: rises 4 inches per 12 inches
• 6/12 pitch: rises 6 inches per 12 inches
• 12/12 pitch: rises 12 inches per 12 inches
